SBL Golf Benefit Raises $55,000 for Heart Center

July 2, 2018 10:01 a.m.

The 29th annual Sarah Bush Lincoln Golf Benefit experienced a successful year, reaching net proceeds of more than $55,000 and attracting 268 golfers on June 8th at the Mattoon Golf & Country Club. Funds raised will support “Life . . . Nothing Beats It,” the SBL Health Foundation’s current campaign to raise funds for the cardiology expansion project that includes a new Heart Center and 21 new private patient rooms.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of our sponsors and the enthusiasm of the golfers,” said Kim Lockart, special events officer for the Health Foundation. “Keeping the event fresh for our golfers can be a challenge, but the real reward is getting to share with them that they are responsible for record net proceeds raised for this outing.” Lockart extended a special thank you to this year’s title sponsors: BSA LifeStructures; CoBank; Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative; First Mid Bank & Trust; Hinshaw & Culbertson, LLP; Dale & Marilyn Hoots; and McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

A $200 cash prize was awarded to the top teams in each flight with the Meadowview Golf Course team of John Trigg, Tom Himes, Brad Tribble and George Huntington winning the morning round; and the Ervin Equipment team, that included Matt Brown, Jake Bushue, Curt Strader and Becky Taylor, winning the afternoon round. Back this year was a long drive challenge in which players could make a donation to the Heart Center by having Mick Yelovich, eight-time long drive world championship qualifier, hit their tee shot. During the challenge, Yelovich, who represents Charity Golf International, generated an additional $3,500 in donations for the Heart Center.

Prizes were awarded to winners on 15 of the 18 holes. Hole winners and prizes were: Dale Boyer, Masterbuilt smoker and gift basket; Cainan Lilly, NASCAR tickets; Bob Lockart, golf package; Joe Pratt, Apple HomePod; John Parker, French Link resort golf package; Jeremy Morton, Cardinals baseball tickets; Matt Brown, Chicago Bulls tickets and gift basket; Mike Morton, Kirkwood National golf package; Brian Hayes, Mattoon Golf & Country Club social membership; Kristi Hutton, Yeti cooler and Effingham Performance Center gift certificate; Connor Greene, Cardinals baseball tickets; and Tom Bridwell, Cardinals baseball tickets and tailgate package. Twenty-one additional prizes, ranging in value from $160 to $700, were awarded to golfers in a random drawing.

There were three hole-in-one challenges with the chance to win a RTV Kubota, sponsored by Niemeyer Kubota; a three-year lease on a GMC Denali sponsored by Diepholz Chevrolet; and a $10,000 cash prize sponsored by First Neighbor Bank. No one won any of the hole-in-one challenges.

Dannie Braun was the winner of this year’s raffle drawing, a seven day/six night trip to Maui, Hawaii. “Thank you to Doug & Tracey McCord for generously donating the use of their Maui home,” Lockart added.
