Orthopedist to Discuss Anterior Approach Hip Replacement

March 24, 2017 3:33 p.m.

Sarah Bush Lincoln Orthopedic Surgeon James Kohlmann, MD, is hosting a lunch and learn event to help people understand the anterior hip approach technique used in hip replacement operations.

The free lunch and learn program is set for 11 am to 12:30 pm Wednesday, April 19, at the Lifespan Center, just north of Sarah Bush Lincoln. Lunch will include broccoli and cheese stuffed chicken breast, twice baked potato casserole, Italian green beans, dinner rolls and cookies.

Other program participants include Sarah Bush Lincoln’s joint camp coordinator, a program for people considering a joint replacement; Center for Healthy Living, Physical Therapy and Lincolnland Home Medical Equipment.

Dr. Kohlmann explained that while there are a few surgical techniques used to replace a total hip joint, he finds that using the anterior approach promotes an earlier and easier recovery with less muscle trauma and less pain.

“Using the anterior approach allows me to do the surgery through a smaller incision. The cut is in the front of the hip rather than in the side or back, like in traditional hip replacements,” Dr. Kohlmann said.

He explained that before someone undergoes a hip replacement, they might want to try medicine for pain or inflammation, walking aids, and physical therapy. If people continue to have pain and have a hard time getting around, hip replacement surgery may be an option.

Dr. Kohlmann cares for people at SBL Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Prairie Pavilion 2, 1004 Health Center Dr. Suite 100. He can be reached at 217 238-3435. For more information about this event and to reserve a seat, please call 217 258-2420.
