Peace Meal Receives Three-Year Funding Award

September 5, 2014 7:35 a.m.

Sarah Bush Lincoln was awarded funds to help support Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program for the next three years. The grant was received from the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

With the notification of the renewed funding, Peace Meal is restoring home delivery to five days a week beginning October 1 to seniors in its 14-county region. Peace Meal Director Barbra Wylie said, “This is wonderful news for our communities and our clients.

Peace Meal provides a nutritional meal and an extra set of eyes on people who generally live alone, plus daily interaction with others. We are thrilled to be able to resume home delivery five days a week, and I know our clients are too.”

Peace Meal helps seniors improve their nutrition, sustain their independence and enhance the quality of their life by providing meals, fellowship and connections to other needed services. Peace Meal also offers noon-time meals at congregate sites throughout the region, in which participants can enjoy fellowship, receive education and enjoy a hearty meal. Sites are located in the following counties: Champaign, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Dewitt, Douglas, Edgar, Ford, Iroquois, Livingston, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt and Shelby. For a list of its sites, please go to www.sarahbush.org/peacemeal/peace-meal-site-locator.

Peace Meal was created in 1974 as a result of the Older Americans Act. While partial funding is received from Older Americans Act and Illinois General Revenue Funds, the majority of funds are raised through the generosity of communities and individuals, and the suggested contribution received from clients.
