Volunteer Nurse Opportunities Available

November 14, 2014 2:48 p.m.

Nurses with a current Illinois nursing license are invited to learn more about the volunteer nurse program at Sarah Bush Lincoln at an orientation and training set for 8 am to noon, Dec. 4 and 5.

Volunteer Nurse Coordinator Tracey McCord, RN, said, “The program has allowed me the opportunity to give of myself by using my nursing skills to help patients and the staff at Sarah Bush Lincoln. It is a fulfilling experience.”

While the volunteer nurses are not included in the staffing schedule, they do provide an extra set of hands and can spend an extended amount of time with patients. Volunteer nurses may assist the nursing staff by taking vitals, visiting with patients, observing a patient’s condition, feeding patients and providing additional support or information to patients and families.

Volunteer nurses can set their own schedules and work in a variety of care settings at the hospital.

McCord explained that the program is looking for people with an active nursing license who maybe retired or who may have taken time off to raise a family or go back to school. Participants will receive training to ensure competence, as well as be eligible for continuing education credit and other educational programs offered at Sarah Bush Lincoln. Program requirements include CPR certification, an active Illinois license and two years experience actively working in the practice of nursing.
