Waqas Khan, MD, joins medical staff as a hospitalist

September 25, 2013 1:09 p.m.

Waqas Khan, MD, has a passion to help people and to have a positive impact on their lives. He recently joined the medical staff at Sarah Bush Lincoln as a Hospitalist.

“I enjoy meeting new people and helping to solve complex medical issues,” Dr. Khan said. “Every situation is unique and it’s important to dig deeper to get the information needed to understand what’s happening with each patient.” In addition to managing medical emergencies, he works with other medical staff members to formulate treatment plans that fit each person’s needs.

Dr. Khan comes to the community after providing care as a hospitalist in California for the past four years. With internal medicine training, he can manage the vast majority of all major medical conditions that afflict most adults admitted to the hospital.

Growing up in Pakistan, Dr. Khan was inspired to become a doctor after losing his mother to breast cancer at the age of 14. Determined to make a difference and help people, he earned his medical degree from University of the Punjab, King Edward Medical School, one of the most prestigious school’s in Pakistan.

Seeking the most advanced training, Dr. Khan came to the United States in 2006 and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital, New York, New York. While residency training was extremely challenging, it also offered a lifetime chance to gain clinical experience with a diverse patient population and many complicated diseases, he said.

Dr. Khan is excited about caring for people at Sarah Bush Lincoln, and is impressed by the welcome he has received in return. His wife is an oncologist practicing in Effingham.

The hospitalists’ office is located on the ground floor of the Health Center. For more information, call the Hospitalist office at (217) 238- or 348-HEAL (4325).
